Capanne
This outlying hamlet is spread out along a long ridge between the upper reaches of the Para and Parella rivers which join a little further below. Its origin is connected with the nearby monastery of the "Cella San Joannes inter ambas Paras", founded by San Romualdo in 986 in a valley under the Fumaiolo-Aquilone massif. The extensive forest of beeches provided the industrious monks with valuable wood which was cut in a water-powered sawmill. Loggers and woodcutters who offered their services in the "grancia" or farm of the Cella, lived in huts. With the passing of time an oratory dedicated to San Rocco was built in place of the huts, while the parish church was at Cella. In 1833, with the sale of the monastery to private buyers, the small oratory of S. Rocco alle Capanne became the parish church which was extended at that time by don Luigi Bigi. The church underwent extensive reconstruction after the earthquakes of 1918-1919 and 1962 which also damaged almost all the houses. Today the town is pretty and "new", like the many small houses whose owners return in summer and holidaymakers which love the magnificent natural environment, the quiet walks and excursions into the surrounding areas, the simple products of the undergrowth (raspberries, blackberries, wild strawberries, chestnuts, mushrooms, truffles) and the semi-wild breeding of animals (meat, sausages and salamis, cheese including ricotta and raviggiolo), which are the basis of tasty local dishes.
