Alfero - localita

Alfero

The largest and most populous outlying hamlet of the municipality of Verghereto, Alfero is located in a beautiful wide valley overlooked by the massive blocks of Mount Comero and Mount Fumaiolo, furrowed by the Alferello River and framed by centuries old chestnut groves and woods of beech and spruce.
Its name recalls a German first name (Alferio), and likewise the dedication of the ancient parish church of S. Andrea Apostolo is of Germanic-Lombard origin. The residential area arose on the border between the Grand Duchy of Tuscany and the Papal State: a memorial stone, near the old church, bears the coat of arms of the Medici family on one side and the keys of Saint Peter on the other side.
Today Alfero is a perfect combination of natural beauty, modern equipment, quiet and traditional hospitality which make it an ideal place for restoring both body and spirit, with hotels, restaurants with cuisine strictly connected with the local area traditions (lamb, game, mushrooms, truffles and chestnuts). Attractions: the waterfall of Alferello, the Sulphur Spring, memorial stone of the “Alpini” corps, the evocative medieval town of Castel d'Alfero, the Madonna della Neve Oratory.
